The overall aim of this school is to extent technological, and digital techniques researched conducted at the AA, to the centre of the Middle East. The AA Alexandria Visiting School is motivated by challenging an acoustic design vignette using these digital tools. Students do not need to already know these programmes. They are powerful open source programmes, free of charge. In addition, there is a wide virtual community that the students will be able to ingrate in seemlessly, after the workshop is completed.
Agenda
Controlled acoustic space design is the focus of this studio. The students will be asked to develop space art installations that follow their group agenda. The aim is to create three distinct sets of space installations, one that introduces sound, one that uses the existing sound in the space, and one that creates a visual sculpture responding to the sound. One of each set will be installed within an exhibition space in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, creating three different acoustical arenas within one space.
Work Progress
Team work is an essential part of the AA research culture, and it the Visiting school are no different. In the due course of a short and intense time, the visiting students, through team effort, gain maximum knowledge by implementing the skills they have received by producing a fully developed project. Team work also forges a strong bond between the students that come from different countries.
Special Lecture
At the AA special lectures are held regularly as an integral part of the research community. It helps to connect an already international student body to more research occurring elsewhere. This complementary educational element has been adopted by many of the visiting schools. We plan to create a series of special lectures or a full day symposium, for the AA Alexandria Visiting School. These events will be open for the general design community.
